
TIGER BASEBALL DOWNS EAGLES; LAKERS FALL TO TILGHMAN
In high school baseball on Tuesday, Kade Gibson stroked a 2-run double in the top of the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie and Murray High held on for a 3-1 win over Graves County in Mayfield. Gibson drove in all of the Tigers’ runs, making a winner out of Nick Holcomb who went the distance with a 2-hitter, walking 1 and striking out 8 as Murray improved to 16-15.
Calloway County scored one run in the first inning but were held scoreless after that as Paducah Tilghman edged the Lakers 3-1 at Laker Field. Justin West went the distance for the win, scattering four hits, walking 2, and striking out 9. Matthew Ray took the loss, giving up 2 hits and 2 runs while walking 4 and striking out 6 over 5 2/3 innings. Cadwell Turner had 2 hits to lead the offense as the Lakers fell to 16-14 on the year. LYONS EDGE LAKER SOFTBALL; MURRAY RALLIES PAST MAYFIELD
In high school softball yesterday, Lyon County used a 9-run fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and coasted to a 10-2 win over Calloway County in Eddyville. Calista Collins drove in 4 runs and Kaelyn Conger 3 as the Lady Lyons improved to 23-9. Adison Hicks hit a solo homer to lead the Lady Lakers while Reese Settle and Paige Kramer enjoyed 2 hit games as Calloway fell to 21-9.
All the scoring came in the sixth inning as Murray High answered Mayfield’s run in the top of the inning with four of their own in a 4-1 home win. Mackenzie Turley homered and Angela Gierhart was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, making a winner out of Kylie Chapman who allowed 1 hit over 6 1/3 innings, walking 1 and striking out 13. Victoria Burton finished the game with 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief as Murray improved to 13-8. In other softball games yesterday:

LOUISVILLE POWERS PAST CLEMSON AT ACC BASEBALL TOURNEY
At the ACC Baseball Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, Louisville pounded out seven home runs in a 15-10 victory over Clemson. The seven long balls were an ACC Championship record by a single team and the most in any game for the Cardinals since hitting eight against Marshall on April 3, 2007. Alex Binelas homered three times as part of a 4-for-5 day with six RBIs. The three home runs also tied the ACC Championship single game record by an individual player. Louisville will have today off before playing its final pool play contest against Georgia Tech tomorrow afternoon.
CATS FALL TO FLORIDA AT SEC BASEBALL TOURNEY
At the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Alabama, Kentucky stranded 14 runners in a 4-1 defeat to Florida in opening round action. The defeat dropped the Wildcats to 29-23 on the season and, barring an unlikely at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, ended their season. Today at 2, second seeded Tennessee faces 10th seeded Alabama.
MSU ATHLETICS POSTS 3.18 GPA FOR SPRING
For the 34th consecutive semester, Murray State athletics has posted a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or better. The departmental GPA of 3.18 for the Spring 2020 semester is the third highest among the 34-semester streak. In addition, each of the last three semesters now represent the three highest semester GPAs during the 34-semester streak. 13 of Murray State’s 15 teams finished the term with a GPA of 3.0 better. Women’s tennis led the way with a 3.70, while softball followed with an equally impressive 3.57. Men’s golf turned in the department’s highest GPA for a men’s team at 3.45. .
CARDINALS LOSE
José Abreu homered and drove in four as the White Sox beat the Cardinals 8-3 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Lucas Giolito out dueled his high school teammate Jack Flaherty to get the win. Flaherty dropped to 8-and-1 after allowing seven runs, three earned, in just under four frames. The Sox go for the sweep today, with airtime set for 12:15 on WNBS AM and FM.
BADER INJURED
Harrison Bader will be out of the Cardinals’ lineup for the near future. The center fielder was placed on the ten-day injured list with a right rib hairline fracture. Bader suffered the injury during Monday’s 5-1 series-opening loss against the White Sox. St. Louis also recalled first-baseman and outfielder John Nogowski from Triple-A Memphis.
AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
The Louisville Bats lost at home to the Toledo Mud Hens, 2-1, in game one of the series, while the Memphis Redbirds tied the game up in the top of the ninth inning, but lost the series opener to the Gwinnett Stripers, 2-1, on a bases-loaded walk-off single. Also, Nashville won at Columbus 8-2.
PREDS LOSE IN OVERTIME
The Nashville Predators and Hurricanes went to overtime for the third game in a row, but Carolina came out on top this time around, winning 3-2 early in the extra session. Game six is back on Broadway tomorrow with the Canes up three games to two and looking to close out the series. Capacity at Bridgestone Arena has been increased to just over 14-thousand.
GRIZZLIES RESUME SERIES AT UTAH
The Memphis Grizzlies play game two of their first-round playoff series against the Jazz tonight. Utah is expected to get star guard Donovan Mitchell back from an ankle injury that’s kept him out for the past 17 contests, though Mitchell was upset that the Jazz scratched him ahead of their game one loss. Tipoff in Salt Lake City is at 9.
TITANS UPDATE
Week one of Titans organized team activities continues. The team was on the field yesterday for the second day of drills this week, but the attention has been on the front office. Pro Football Talk reports that Falcons all-pro wide receiver Julio Jones has his eyes on the Titans and the Patriots as trade destinations. General manager Jon Robinson would need to free up some cap space in order to acquire Jones, who did not attend day one of Falcons organized team activities yesterday. A-J Brown and Derrick Henry are among the Titans advocating publicly for the team to land the 32-year-old.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points as the Lakers triumphed over the Suns 109-102 in Game Two in Phoenix. Los Angeles evened their series with the Suns at one game apiece. Luka Doncic scored 39 points to lead the Mavericks to a 127-121 win over the Clippers in Los Angeles. The Mavericks take a 2-0 series lead. Kawhi Leonard had 41 points in defeat. Kevin Durant scored 26 points to lead the Nets to a 130-108 win and 2-0 series lead over the Celtics. Tonight, the 76ers host the Wizards in Game Two, the Hawks visit the Knicks for Game Two, and the Grizzlies are at the Jazz for the second game of their series.
Julius Randle is being named the N-B-A’s Most Improved Player. The New York Knicks forward was named an All-Star for the first time this year, his seventh pro season, and averaged 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. He received 98 of the 100 possible first place votes for the award. Detroit’s Jerami Grant received the other two first-place votes, and finished in second place.
Deshaun Watson may not face a deposition until late February in the lawsuit against him by 22 women alleging sexual assault. While the case has been entered into discovery, it will play out over the 2021 N-F-L season with depositions to begin in September. However, according to the docket, the Houston Texans quarterback can’t be formally questioned until February 22nd, 2022. His attorney said Tuesday that the quarterback is not in any settlement discussions with any of the accusers.
Captain Jordan Staal scored 2:03 into overtime to the Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Predators in Raleigh and put Nashville on the brink of elimination. Meanwhile, Jack Campbell made 32 saves as the Maple Leafs beat the Canadiens 4-nothing in Montreal to take a commanding three-games-to-one lead over the Habs. Tonight, three teams seek elimination as the Islanders seek to exorcise the Penguins in New York, the Lightning seek to oust the Panthers in Tampa, and Golden Knights seek to dismiss the Wild in Minnesota.
American Olympic athletes are still planning to head to Tokyo for the Summer Olympics. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said U.S. athletes will be following strict, longstanding COVID protocols. Japan is in the midst of another coronavirus surge, which has prompted a “Do Not Travel” advisory from the State Department. Tokyo is set to host the Olympics starting in July.
