RACERS BEAT STORMS AND UT MARTIN IN SEASON OPENER
Preston Rice threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Murray State defeated UT Martin 14-10 on Sunday at Roy Stewart Stadium in a game that was completed after a lightning delay of more than two hours. The game was the 2020 football season opener for each team after the traditional fall season was postponed until spring, and was the Racers first game in 463 days. Rice connected with Daquan Dallas on an 83-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter, and then drove his team 65-yards on nine plays, scoring on a two-yard run with 4:11 remaining. Murray State returns to action Sunday in Cape Girardeau when they take on nationally ranked Southeast Missouri in a 2 pm game. In other OVC games, number 21 SEMO rolled Eastern Illinois 47-7. 14th-ranked Jacksonville State downed #23 Tennessee Tech 27-10, and Brian Snead set an FCS record for rushing yards in a quarter to lead Austin Peay to a 27-20 win over Tennessee State. Snead rushed for 204 yards in the first quarter. He had TD runs of 75, 67, and 44 on the first three Governors’ possessions.

CROSSTOWN CLASSIC TONIGHT
Tonight, the Calloway County boys host Murray High in a 7:30 Murray Bank Crosstown Classic game. Coverage begins at 7 on WNBS and at 7:15 on WBZB. On Saturday the Tigers fell 70-56 in overtime to Clinton County in the second round of the Kentucky All-A Classic, while the Lakers lost at home to Paducah Tilghman 58-39.

RACER SOFTBALL WINS
Murray State softball defeated IUPUI 5-4 yesterday in their fifth and final game at the Tiger Invite in Auburn, Alabama. Taylor Jackson led the Racers with a triple and 2 RBI’s while Logan Braundmeier added a home run in support of winning pitcher Jenna Veber. The 3-11 Racers will return to action on Friday to begin OVC play with a three-game weekend series at UT Martin

MSU WOMEN THIRD IN SOUTH CAROLINA EVENT
Raeysha Surendran shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday at the Kiawah Island Classic in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, leading the Racer women’s golf team to third place score of 293, which is seven shots back from leader East Tennessee . MSU’s Payton Carter shot an even-par 72 and was in 11th place. Play continues today.

RACER TENNIS FALLS TO MTSU
Murray State tennis fell 5-2 to Middle Tennessee yesterday at the Kenlake Tennis Center. The 1-3 Racers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Samford.

RACER CROSS COUNTRY GUNNING FOR OVC TITLE
The Murray State men’s and women’s cross country teams will run at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in Clarksville, Tennessee today. The women will run a 5K at noon followed by the men running an 8K at 12:45 p.m.

RACER HOOP SQUADS READY FOR EVANSVILLE
Both Murray State basketball teams will begin play on Thursday at the OVC Tournament in Evansville. The 6th-seeded Racer women will play 3rd-seed SEMO at 3:30, followed by the 5th-seeded Murray State men facing 4th-seeded Jacksonville at 7. Coaches Rechelle Turner and Matt McMahon will join football coach Dean Hood to talk about their games on Hey Coach, beginning at 6 on FROGGY 103.7

GRIZZLIES ROLL ROCKETS
Justise Winslow scored a game-high 20 points off the bench as the Grizzlies wiped out the Rockets 133-84 in Houston. Reserve Brandon Clarke had 16 points and 12 rebounds for Memphis, which improves to 15-and-15. Ja Morant was held to 6 points, but dished out a team high 7 assists. The Grizzlies are on the road tomorrow night playing the Wizards in D.C.

AREA HOCKEY UPDATE
On the ice, the Nashville Predators beat Columbus 3-1 to sweep the two-game weekend series in Nashville. Nashville remains home tomorrow night to host Carolina. The St. Louis Blues open a two-game road set with Anaheim tonight.

CARDINALS PLAY TO TIE IN SPRING OPENER
The Cardinals earned a 4-4 tie against the Nationals in their Grapefruit League opener at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Nolan Arenado went 0-for-2 in his debut in a Cards uniform. St. Louis starter Jack Flaherty struggled, giving up three-earned runs on four hits in one inning. The Redbirds are off today before visiting the Marlins tomorrow.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
LeBron James led a balanced attack with 19 points as the Lakers waxed the Warriors 117-91 in Los Angeles. The Lakers led by 20 after the first quarter and improved to 24-and-11. Steph Curry had 16 points for Golden State. Draymond Green left with an ankle injury.

The future of Victor Oladipo in Houston is an uncertainty. ESPN reports he recently rejected a two-year, 45.2-million-dollar contract extension, the most the Rockets can offer until the offseason. Oladipo was acquired from the Pacers as part of the James Harden trade.

The spring training exhibition season is underway. Twenty-eight of the 30 MLB clubs played their first game on Sunday. The World Series champion Dodgers beat the A’s 2-1 in seven innings in Cactus League play in Arizona. The Mets and Cubs play their first games today.

William Byron dominated the final stage to take the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He beat out Tyler Reddick by 2.777 seconds in the number-24 Chevrolet. Martin Truex Jr. took third. It was Byron’s first win of the season and the second of his career.

Collin Morikawa posted a three-shot win at the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession. He finished at 18-under par. Brooks Koepka was among three that tied for second at minus-15. Many golfers wore red in tribute to injured star Tiger Woods.
