CALLOWAY SOFTBALL CLAIMS DISTRICT TITLE
It was a good news/bad news day yesterday for Laker Nation as Calloway County split a pair of Fourth District Tournament Championship games. In softball, Calloway County rallied for three runs on the top of the sixth to overcome a 5-4 deficit, and held on for a 7-5 win over Marshall County to claim their first Fourth District Tournament title since 2017. Addison Hicks drove in three runs, including two with a sixth inning double that put the Lady Lakers on top to stay. Kylie Stallings added a 2 run homer for Calloway, making a winner out of Caitlyn Powers, who relieved Izzy Housden, who came back in to notch the save.

MARSHALS CLAIM DISTRICT BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
In the Fourth District Baseball title game, Marshall County broke open a tight game with a five-run fifth, pushing a 1-0 lead to 6-0, and then coasting to a 14-3 win over Calloway County to claim the tournament championship. Branden Pingel was 3 for 4 at the plate to lead the Laker offense while Colby White took the loss after giving up 2 earned runs over 4 innings. Griffin Darnall led the Marshals with 3 RBI’s.

CALLOWAY CLAIMS 2A REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD TITLES
At Saturday’s 2A Region 1 Track and Field championships in Paducah, Calloway County swept the team titles winning the boys title by six points over Paducah Tilghman and the girls title by 26 points over Tilghman.

RACERS FALL TO SEMO ON OVC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
At the OVC Tournament Championship game on Sunday at The Ballpark at Jackson, Kyle Miller allowed only one run on two hits and notched a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game victory as top-seeded Southeast Missouri beat second-seeded Murray State 10-1. The Racers made it to the title game by downing Austin Peay 7-6 in an elimination game on Saturday, and then blowing out SEMO 10-1 to force a Sunday winner-take-all matchup. MSU’s Jordan Cozart, Connor Holden, Jacob Pennington, and Brock Anderson were named to the All-Tournament team. Murray State finished the season with a 33-25 overall record, the fifth most wins in program history and they set a program record with 18 OVC winsThe 84 home runs tied the program record set back in 2017 for home runs in a season.

CARDINALS PEN FALTERS IN LOSS TO DODGERS
The Cardinals bullpen gave up seven runs in a 9-4 loss to the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Jack Flaherty struck out nine and gave up two runs over five frames for St. Louis before being pulled early with left side tightness. Justin Williams, Dylan Carlson and Tyler O’Neill each homered for the Cards. The series continues tonight. Airtime is set for 8:15 on Classic Hits, WNBS AM and FM.

GRIZZLIES LOSE AT HOME TO FALL INTO 3-1 HOLE
The Memhis Grizzlies face a 3-1 deficit after losing 120-113 to the Jazz in Game Four in Memphis. Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 23 points and 12 assists, followed by Dillon Brooks and Jaren Jackson Jr., who each scored 21 points. Donovan Mitchell led all scorers with 30 points. Memphis will play Utah on the road in Game Five tomorrow.

TITANS RESUME OTA’S
The Tennessee Titans are back on the practice field this week for OTAs. They practice today, Thursday and Friday this week. Tennessee will finish up OTAs next week.

MEMPHIS VS LOUISVILLE SERIES BEGINS
The Memphis Redbirds and Louisville Bats both start six-game home series tonight. Memphis starts off its series against the Toledo Mud Hens and Louisville will play the St. Paul Saints.

SEMO LANDS IN OXFORD REGIONAL
OVC Champion Southeast Missouri is the No. 4 seed in the Oxford Regional of the NCAA Baseball Championship and will play #! seed Ole Miss on Friday night. Florida State and Southern Miss will also play on Friday in the Oxford Regional. It marks the third-straight tournament the OVC champion has been sent to Oxford. Three years ago Tennessee Tech, who received an at-large selection, won the Oxford Regional by defeating Ole Miss.

VOLS AND VANDY WILL HOST NCAA REGIONALS
The Vols and Commodores know their regional foes in the NCAA Tournament after the regional groups were announced Sunday. Tennessee hosts a regional and will face Duke, Liberty and Wright State. Vanderbilt also hosts a regional and will play Georgia Tech, Presbyterian and Indiana State. Regional play begins on Friday.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The 76ers weren’t able to complete the sweep as they were upset by the Wizards 122-114 in Game Four in D.C. Joel Embiid left the game with right knee soreness as Philadelphia’s series lead shrank to 3-1. In the West, the Jazz are one game away from elimination after beating the Grizzlies 120-113 in Memphis. Utah has a 3-1 series lead. Tonight, the Nets will look to finish the Celtics off in Game Five at Brooklyn. Out West, a pair of split series are prepared for a pivotal night as the Nuggets host the Trail Blazers for Game Five and the Suns host the Lakers for the fifth game in their series.

The Lakers could be without a major piece for Game Five of their series against the Suns in Phoenix tonight. According to ESPN, Anthony Davis is questionable for Game Five after an MRI confirmed a groin strain. Davis was already battling a sprained left knee before the groin issue ultimately took him out of the game after 19 minutes of action in Game Four. The series between Los Angeles and Phoenix is tied a two games apiece.

Yet another incident is taking place at an NBA game as a fan stormed the court during the Wizards and 76ers playoff game in Washington D.C. During the third quarter of Game Four between Philadelphia and Washington, a fan ran onto the court and slapped the backboard before being tackled by security. The fan has reportedly been banned from the arena and charges are underway from the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia.

Brendan Gallagher scored for the Canadiens as they beat the Maple Leafs 3-1 in Toronto in Game Seven of the North Division playoffs, coming back from a three-games-to-one deficit to clinch the series. Meanwhile, in Boston, Casey Cizikas took an errant pass on a breakaway and beat Tuukka Rask as the Islanders beat the Bruins in overtime 4-3 to steal Game Two. Tonight, the Hurricanes will host the Lightning in Raleigh with hopes of evening their best-of-seven series.

Naomi Osaka is withdrawing from the French Open. The four-time Grand Slam champion announced the move in a lengthy statement on Twitter. She also revealed she has been battling depression since 2018. Osaka explained she gets really anxious before speaking to the media. Her comments about the media come after she was fined 15-thousand dollars for not talking with reporters at the French Open. Osaka is the number two ranked woman’s tennis player in the world.
