RACER VOLLEYBALL FALLS AT SIUE
A day after falling in a five set thriller, Murray State Volleyball fell 3-0 at SIUE yesterday as the Cougars completed the weekend sweep. The scores were 25-13, 25-20, 28-26. Jayla Holcombe paced the Racers with 9 kills, while Callie Anderton added 19 assists and Becca Fernandez had 21 digs. The 2-4 Racers will play at UT Martin on Sunday and next Monday.

TWO RACER SOFTBALL PLAYERS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Murray State softball closed the weekend at the Jaguar Classic in Mobile, Alabama with a 3-1 loss to Butler on Sunday. Hannah James and Lily Fischer were named to the all-tournament team. The Racers will return to action on Friday when they begin a five-game weekend at the Tiger Invite in Auburn, Alabama.

RACER TENNIS LOSES TO MTSU
Murray State tennis hosted Middle Tennessee at the Kenlake Tennis Center yesterday, falling 5-2 in their first match since January 23rd. The Racers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Samford.

KNIGHT LEADS RACER MEN IN ALABAMA EVENT
The Murray State men’s golf team managed to get in all but five holes of their second round at the ASU Spring Kickoff before darkness halted play Sunday evening. The Racers held a 10-shot edge after the first 18 holes at Capitol Hill Golf Club in Prattville, Alabama. MSU’s Austin Knight carded a 73 to take the top spot in the field of 33 players. The event continues today.

CARTER LEADS RACER WOMEN IN GEORGIA
The Murray State women’s golf team began the spring season Sunday with 18 holes of competition at the Strutter Gus Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia. Originally scheduled to get 36 holes of play in, darkness suspended the second round Sunday evening. The second round will be finished this morning with the final round played in the afternoon at the Georgia Southern University Golf Course. Murray State’s Payton Carter enters the day in 26th place with a round of 80.

RACER BASEBALL OPENS THE SEASON TODAY IN NASHVILLE
The Murray State baseball team will open the season as they face Lipscomb an a season opening doubleheader in Nashville. The Racers were 10-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play before the season was cancelled last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Game times today are set for noon and 4 pm.

RACER HOOPS TEAMS PUNCH TICKETS TO EVANSVILLE
Saturday night, Tevin Brown scored a season-high 29 points with 7 three-pointers as Murray State pounded SIUE 89-62. Juice Hill had 14 points for the Racers who improved to 13-10 overall and 10-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. In the women’s game, Katelyn Young had 25 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals as the Racer women rallied from 13 down with a dominating second-half in a 68-60 win. Murray State improved to 13-10 overall and 10-8 in the OVC. Tonight on Hey Coach, we will talk with basketball coaches Rechelle Turner and Matt McMahon, as well as Racer football coach Dean Hood. Hey Coach airs at 6 on FROGGY 103.7.

CATS LOOK TO BUILD ON WINNING STREAK
The UK basketball team is on a three game winning streak. The Wildcats beat Tennessee in Knoxville on Saturday, 70-55. The ‘Cats improved to 8-and-13 with the win. UK had been expected to play Texas A-and-M tomorrow night in Lexington, but the game has been postponed due to coronavirus concerns within the Aggies program.

MURRAY BOYS WIN, CALLOWAY GIRLS LOSE SATURDAY GAMES
In high school basketball games on Saturday, the Murray High boys defeated Madisonville 57-49 at Marshall County Hoopfest. Qwanie McCallister and Grant Whitaker each scored 20 points to lead the 9-5 Tigers who play at Lyon County tonight at 7 in an All-A Classic sectional. Airtime is set for 6:30 on WNBS AM and FM and the ZENO Radio App. The 7-4 Murray girls will also play an All-A Sectional tonight at 7 at Crittenden County. The McCracken County girls pulled away from Calloway County 65-49. Skylar Waller led the 11-5 Lakers with 22 points. The Laker boys game with Hopkins County Central was postponed. The Laker boys and girls will host St. Mary in a doubleheader tonight, with coverage beginning at 5:45 on 104.5 WBZB and the ZENO Radio App.

David Gist ran for a pair of touchdowns and Tennessee Tech defeated defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Austin Peay 27-21 in the league opener for both teams on Sunday. Three other OVC games were postponed due to weather. Murray State will open the season this coming Sunday at home against UT Martin.

CARDINALS FULL SQUAD HEADED TO FLORIDA
The Cardinals full-squad reports to spring training tomorrow. Pitchers and catchers began workouts last week at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. The realigned Grapefruit League schedule will kick off on February 28th with the Cards hosting the Nationals. The Redbirds will play only the Nats, Astros, Mets and Marlins in its Grapefruit League pod.

GRIZZLIES AT DALLAS TONIGHT
The Memphis Grizzlies play the Mavericks tonight in Dallas. Memphis lost 128-97 on Saturday to the Phoenix Suns to wrap up a four-game homestand with a 2-and-2 record. Former Racer Cam Payne scored 19 points for the Suns. The Grizz are 13-and-13 overall.

PREDS TRAVEL TO DETROIT
The Nashville Predators play tomorrow night against the Red Wings in Detroit. Nashville won 4-2 Saturday in Columbus to improve to 2-and-2 in their last four and 7-10-0 overall. The St. Louis Blues open a two-game home set with the Kings tonight. St. Louis is coming off a 5-4 loss to the Sharks Saturday. The Blues are 3-and-2 in their last five.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Ryan Saunders is out as head coach of the Timberwolves. Multiple reports say he was fired after Sunday’s 103-99 loss to the Knicks in New York. Minnesota is last in the NBA at 7-and-24. Ryan is the son of late T’wolves executive and head coach Flip Saunders.

The Rockies will again be without outfielder Ian Desmond this season. He posted on Instagram that, for now, he’s decided to opt out of the 2021 season. Desmond, who also sat out last year, says being with family is more important right now and he’ll see how things unfold.

Novak Djokovic is the Australian Open champion once again. The 33-year-old beat Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 to win his third straight Aussie title and ninth overall. It’s also his 18th Grand Slam singles title, two behind men’s co-leaders Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Christopher Bell held off Joey Logano to win the O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course. It was the first career NASCAR win for Bell. Logano took second, while Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top-five.

Max Homa beat Tony Finau on the second playoff hole to win The Genesis Invitational at Riviera County Club. They finished regulation tied at 12-under after Homa blew a short putt on 18. It was his second career win. Sam Burns took third at 11-under.
