ALL-A CLASSIC CANCELED
An hour before the first team was to take to the court at McBrayer Arena yesterday the Kentucky All “A” Classic, Kentucky All-A Classic Twitter page announced that the tournament had been cancelled. The tournament is usually held in Richmond and brings 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams from schools with 400 or fewer students for a tournament that usually runs Wednesday through Sunday. The decision was made to cancel the event because of continued and worsening winter weather conditions after only six of the teams were able to make it to Richmond. The Murray High girls and boys teams had won Region 1 championships to earn spots in the field of 16 schools from each region for both boys and girls. There was one game played yesterday between teams that made it to Richmond as Walton-Verona defeated the Lyon County boys 74-70. That game did not count as an All-A Classic contest.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The ice storm and power outage across Texas is creating havoc for teams. Tonight’s Dallas Mavericks-Detroit game is postponed. The Dallas Stars had their NHL games against Nashville postponed Monday and last night. Several college basketball games have also been impacted.
The Spurs’ season is on hold after four players tested positive for COVID-19. San Antonio’s next three games have been postponed as a result, including tonight’s contest in Cleveland. The Charlotte Hornets’ next two games have also been postponed to conduct contact tracing.
The Timberwolves will be without guard D’Angelo Russell for an extended period. He’s set to have arthroscopic surgery today to remove a loose body in his knee and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Russell missed his fourth straight game last night against the Lakers.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence is recovering from shoulder surgery. ESPN reports the procedure was on his non-throwing left shoulder, but is not expected to keep him from NFL training camp. The Clemson product is projected to be the top pick in this year’s NFL Draft by Jacksonville.
The Carolina Panthers are parting ways with two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short. They’ve released the 32-year-old, who has played just five total games over the last two seasons due to shoulder injuries. Cutting Short saves the Panthers 8.6-million in cap space.
